Title Sequence Clip Review

Films and movies are watched by everyone, sometimes throughout someone's entire life like me for example. People watch movies as a form of entertainment and a way to pass time. But what most people don't notice about movies is that the entirety of the film has meaning, including the introduction and opening sequences. For example, the fonts, colors, and music used in the beginning sequences help give an insight to what the movie might entail. For example, in the opening of the movie "SCREAM," the title is shown in red and blue flashing lights to resemble police car lights, and then fades to just solid red to represent blood. Just the color of the title and the abrupt shift of colors can help infer that the movie could possibly be about bloody actions and trying to get the cops involved but can't. Another detail in the opening of the same movie is the suspenseful music being played in the background. This choice of music helps us get an idea that the movie will be more mysterious and action filled. Some other examples of important details are from the opening of the movie Jaws, such as the music and filming angels. The movie starts with a girl getting attacked by a shark with intense, dramatic music playing in the background. As the girl gets pulled under the water by the shark, a pool of blood surrounds her and the music stops, as if the event didn’t happen. This foreshadows a theme in the movie; the government trying to cover up the attack by acting as if it did not happen. Also, the way that the opening scene is filmed shows a more dramatic angel, to help add more suspense to the shark attack. Filming the attack from a higher angel than the other scenes makes it more dramatic. From the movie Apocalypse Now, the movie starts with trees burning with southern sounding music playing in the back. The frame then merges into another frame that shows a man lying in bed sleeping. In the background, you can hear a plane flying while the frame shows a fan. The opening starts to seem more intense, while the man is dreaming of the fan being the plane as a result of PTSD. The opening sequence of this movie helps us to understand that the main character of the movie is living with PTSD. In the opening of the movie Pulp Fiction, the couple starts by eating at the café, holding normal conversations and acting like regular people. A few minutes into the movie, the couple's conversations shift into ones about robbery, and their normal looking faces shift into crazy ones. The opening reveals that the couples make their living off robbing people. Lastly, the opening of the movie Saturday Night Fever shows a man of good looks walking down the street carrying what looks to be a gallon of paint. The lettering on the screen is shown in a bright red font that matches the characters shirt. The man walks down the street carrying himself with pride- shopping and trying to attract women walking down the street. This opening helps us understand what the main characters personality is like, and how he may act throughout the movie.
