Creativity and Genre

This week in class, we continued to expand ideas and create more details in regards to our movie plans, more specifically the genre and style. In order to develop ideas on what genre movie we wanted to produce, my group and I researched different movies and their genres to see what we wanted to recreate. We found in our research that the creative process is very important while trying to come up with these details. In an interview with Ron Beghetto he states, “Creative self-efficacy is a specific type of creative self-confidence that helps shape more global beliefs about our creative abilities and identity.” This quote proves the fact that having a creative mind is very important while trying to come up with details such as the genre of a movie. Also, in the Ted Talk on the theory of creativity it was mentioned that children think more expansively, and we begin to think more reductively as we get older because education teaches us to look for only one right answer. In order to think more creatively, we must teach ourselves to get out of the mindset that there is one correct answer we should be looking for and start thinking about all possible answers. While conducting our research on different genre options, we decided to look into the producers and editors of various movies we have seen and enjoy. Looking at producers such as Adam Sandler helped us make our decision on what genre movie we would like to attempt to produce ourselves. Another activity that helped us realize what genre would be ideal for us was the Introductions activity. During this activity, we all compared ourselves to similar animals, such as lions, dolphins, donkey, and sloths which represent confidence and silliness. Because we all represent those similar traits, we wanted to pick a movie genre with tropes that could resemble that. Because comedy movie tropes include fun blended with romance, and drama tropes showing characters that are friendly, we believed researching dramedy producers would be a good idea based on our personalities. Overall, my group and I have decided to create a movie of the comedy drama genre. After conducting research and performing activities to help reach this decision, they helped prove that this is the genre for us. As we all enjoy this genre of movie, have knowledge on how these movies should be edited, and have similar creative processes, we can come together and create this genre of movie in a creative way that other groups couldn’t. Also, the personalities in the group could help bring out the tropes present in our film genre.

Post Production 2- Filming Process and Editing

           Skylar and I began reshooting the second take of our film on Monday. We planned this process to take 2 days, allowing us to have enough time to assure the clips were ideal and went together smoothly. The first day of filming we began by filming the scenes in the hallways and in the classroom. We shot each scene a few times in order to have options for clips we could use while editing, and made sure to hit different angles to capture various emotions. Because the first day of filming took place during one of our class periods, we had limited time to use the classroom. We wrapped up the first day of filming by filming the scene with the teacher and discussed coming back to film again the next day.      Day two of filming began after school on Tuesday. Peer Review

     Last week as a class, we started presenting our films and magazine projects in order to receive feedback and some critical criticism from our teacher and peers. Skylar and I volunteered to show our film first and took notes on the criticism we received. Overall, most the class didn’t have anything too harsh to say. It was commonly stated that it was hard to hear the actors, specifically the teacher in the theater scene, due to having to wear masks and not having a professional microphone. Their advice was to lower the background music or to in cooperate subtitles to let the audience know what is being said clearly. Some other suggestions brought to our attention were to use less transitions, fix lighting in some scenes, as well as including a larger variety of camera angles. Title Sequence Clip Review

Films and movies are watched by everyone, sometimes throughout someone's entire life like me for example. People watch movies as a form of entertainment and a way to pass time. But what most people don't notice about movies is that the entirety of the film has meaning, including the introduction and opening sequences. For example, the fonts, colors, and music used in the beginning sequences help give an insight to what the movie might entail. For example, in the opening of the movie "SCREAM," the title is shown in red and blue flashing lights to resemble police car lights, and then fades to just solid red to represent blood. Just the color of the title and the abrupt shift of colors can help infer that the movie could possibly be about bloody actions and trying to get the cops involved but can't.
